Oscars 2015: Lady Gaga delivers a Julie Andrews-approved performance celebrating ‘The Sound of Music’ anniversary

Lady Gaga and Julie Andrews embrace on stage.
The hills were alive with the sound of Gaga on “The Sound of Music” at Sunday’s Oscars.
And Julie Andrews herself approved of the performance.
Directly after Gaga recreated Andrews’ fine diction and clarion tone in her performance of songs from the classic musical, its original star came out to embrace her. “Thank you for that,” Andrews said, through tears. “It really warmed my heart.”
The performance saluted the 50th anniversary of “The Sound of Music,” the most popular movie musical of all time.
Just nine days before its golden anniversary, Gaga scaled Richard Rodgers’ Alpine melodies with warmth and grace. She ably imitated Andrews’ sonorous, original readings of songs like the title track, “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things.”
She even belted to the sky mother superior’s operatic finale, “Climb Every Mountain.”
Gaga, dressed in an elegant white and silver gown, seemed to relish performing songs associated with an era well before her birth.

It fit in well with her recent recordings of the American standards with Tony Bennett on “Cheek To Cheek.”
Like that project, this poised performance went a ways towards establishing Gaga as a star for any age - not just one tied to the fickle nature of the charts of the hour.
